Tougher driving penalties to be tabled

*

The Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2008 will be gazetted February 6 and tabled to lawmakers on the 20th, the Transport & Housing Bureau said today.

Legislative amendments are proposed to:

* raise the maximum jail term for dangerous driving causing death;

* introduce new penalties for drink-driving offences;

* empower uniformed Police to conduct random breath tests; and,

* impose a mandatory requirement for repeat offenders and offenders of serious traffic offences to attend driving improvement courses.

The Government also proposes extending the probationary driving licence scheme currently applicable to novice motorcyclists, to novice drivers of cars and vans.
