Snakes in stockings: The pythons seized will be sent to the Animal Management Centre in Sheung Shui.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department seized an illegal shipment of 15 snakes and 22 lizards from Indonesia at the airport yesterday.

They were tightly packed inside nylon stockings and cigarette cartons, together with a consignment of animals destined for the Mainland.

A man was arrested for hiding the animals inside his luggage without any permit or health certificates. He was liable to a fine of $2,000 and three months' imprisonment.

The 13 pythons and 12 monitor lizards seized - identified as endangered species - will be sent to the department's Animal Management Centre in Sheung Shui.

Last year saw the seizure of about 3,700 reptiles, 16 dogs, four cats and seven other mammals found illegally imported into Hong Kong.
