Few illegal workers have forged Smart IDs

*

Of the 5,635 illegal workers caught in Hong Kong last year, just 28 - or 0.5% - had forged Smart ID cards, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.

Responding to a question in the Legislative Council, Mr Lee said the Immigration Department and Police have seized only 85 forged Smart ID cards since their introduction in mid-2003.

Before the Smart ID cards' introduction, there were on average 10,780 reports of lost ID cards every month, he said. Since the Smart ID cards came into service, that average has fallen to about 9,990.

If employers have any doubt concerning the authenticity of Smart ID cards presented by job applicants, they can call the Immigration Department's enquiry hotline, 2824 1551, for assistance. The public may also visit the department's webpage for information about the security features incorporated in Smart ID cards.
