Classes of five secondary schools - GT (Ellen Yeung) College in Tseung Kwan O, King George V School, South Island School, American International School and TWGH Li Ka Shing College in Fanling - will be suspended after some of their students were confirmed to have human swine flu.

The Department of Health reported 49 newly confirmed cases today, including 27 men and 22 women, aged one to 55, bringing the total tally to 221. Nine of the new cases are secondary students.

Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Thomas Tsang said the five schools above each had one case, and the students concerned are three boys and two girls, aged 13 to 15. The schools will suspend classes from tomorrow until July 2. No large-scale outbreaks were reported in these schools so far.

The other three secondary students come from Australian International School Hong Kong in Kowloon Tong, while another is a Kwun Tong's Evangelise China Fellowship Saint Too Canaan College student.

Of the new cases today, 18 are local, five are imported from places including the US and Thailand, and two are pending classification.

Dr Tsang said some cases have been detected at the Hospital Authority's designated flu clinics, indicating these clinics are functioning well in identifying the swine flu patients.
