| Game plan: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee and Chief Secretary Henry Tang brief reporters on the progress of equestrian event preparation. |
Chief Secretary Henry Tang has called for discipline and patience from spectators and commuters to ensure the smooth running of Hong Kong's Olympic equestrian events, which start on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Mr Tang said as tickets have sold out spectators should arrive at the venues early to avoid congestion. They should also observe the venues' rules and check media reports for possible rescheduling of events. He urged commuters, especially those using East Rail, to be patient if the morning or evening peak hour is more crowded than usual.
"To all the people and businesses in Sha Tin and North District who may be affected by the transport and security arrangements during the games, I thank them, for the patience, goodwill and community spirit that is necessary for us to make the games a success," Mr Tang said.
"While we are taking every necessary measure to help achieve the objective of co-hosting the equestrian events in a peaceful manner, we very much want [them] to be a happy, joyous and memorable occasion for everyone."
Ready for action
All 218 horses from 42 countries and regions participating in the games have arrived, and riders from 38 countries and regions have checked in to the Olympic Village.
Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said the Government will safeguard the city's stability and prosperity during the games, and will prevent people from spoiling the event, adding he did not rule out the possibility of upgrading security measures when necessary.
He said Police have asked hostels to report suspicious people, and designated demonstration areas will be set up near the event venues. Police will do their best to facilitate demonstrators' requests.
Meanwhile, Equestrian Company Chief Executive Officer WK Lam said two extra competition days have been reserved should the event be postponed due to inclement weather, adding the drainage system and other facilities have been checked to ensure they can withstand any adverse conditions.
