Avian flu ruled out in ill boy

The Centre for Health Protection and the Hospital Authority have clarified the three-year-old boy admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital yesterday is not suspected to have avian influenza.

His chest x-ray was normal and it is likely he has acute gastroenteritis. He came down with diarrhoea, fever and upper respiratory tract symptoms yesterday morning. He was taken to a private hospital in Sha Tin and later transferred to Prince of Wales. He is now stable.

The boy had earlier stayed in Fujian, however, no human or poultry outbreak of avian influenza has been reported there for more than six months.
