The Department of Health has called on consumers and doctors to be cautious when using seven brands of human immunoglobulin and human albumin products after drugs bearing counterfeit labels with bogus or no registration numbers were seized in Tsuen Wan.
Department staff and Police officers raided a Tsuen Wan premises today and seized 4,000 units of human immunoglobulin and human albumin products bearing false registration numbers
Six brands of unregistered pharmaceutical products without registration numbers were also seized during the operation. For details of the seized drugs, click here.
No report of adverse effects relating to the concerned products has been received so far. Further investigations are underway. Notifications are being sent to doctors to alert them of the incident.
Prescription required
Human albumin solution is used for plasma volume replacement and to restore colloid osmotic pressure. It is used in conditions such as burns, severe acute albumin loss and shock due to blood loss. It can only be supplied with a doctor's prescription and under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Under the Pharmacy & Poisons Ordinance, all pharmaceutical products must be registered before sale in Hong Kong to ensure that the registered products meet the required standard of safety, efficacy and quality. Registered products are required to be labeled with a registration number.
