Imported fish monitoring to be bolstered

*
Food & Environmental Hygiene Department

Hong Kong and Guangdong have agreed to enhance the monitoring of fish transported to Hong Kong by boat to ensure stocks meet safety standards.

Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Eddy Chan today visited the Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection & Quarantine Bureau and met its Deputy Director Huang Weiming to discuss regulating Mainland freshwater fish imports.

Both sides expressed concern over the import of freshwater fish into Hong Kong from improper channels. Mr Chan said the Centre for Food Safety and the Customs & Excise Department will closely monitor the situation.

Members of the Hong Kong delegation included the Deputy Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Cheuk Wing-hing and Assistant Secretary Johnson Tang; Centre for Food Safety Controller Dr Mak Sin-ping and the centre's Assistant Director (Food Surveillance & Control) Dr Constance Chan.
