Innovative equestrian fence design wanted

If you love drawing or designing, don't miss the jumping fence design competition organised by the Olympic Equestrian Company that allows you to prove your creativity and excellent design concept.

The submission deadline is February 28. Winning entries' design concepts may be adopted in some of the jumping fences in the 2008 Olympic equestrian events.

Equestrian Company Manager (Competition) Wan Wai-yee said renowned course designer Leopoldo Palacios will be the head judge of the competition. Palacios designed the jumping course for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and has been chosen to design the course for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Design concepts

The jumping fences in the previous Olympic Games had showcased characteristics of the hosting countries and cities. For example, the Sydney games had jumps that resembled the country's representative icons such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and a kangaroo.

Miss Wan said although traditional Chinese icons can best represent China and Hong Kong, participants may also consider adding other elements in their design to convey the theme of the Beijing Olympics - Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics, the People's Olympics, and Hong Kong's cultural identity.

The design should reflect the country's and the city's modern image, she noted, adding that modern landmark buildings can be considered.

Open to all

The contest comprises junior (under 16), senior (16 or above) and professional (existing design school students and those engaged in design-related work) categories. Entry forms can be downloaded here.

Each entry should be submitted in a sealed envelope marked with "Jumping Fence Design Competition" to the the Equestrian Company,  37/F Bank of China Tower, 1 Garden Road, Central by February 28. The collection office opens Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, except on public holidays.

Cash prizes

The judging criteria will be based on originality, adherence to topic or theme and creativity. Results will be announced at the 500-day Countdown Carnival on March 27.

Cash prizes of $10,000, $8,000 and $5,000 will be awarded in each category. Award-winning and finalist works will be displayed in Kowloon Park from March 27.
