H5N1 trend closely monitored: York Chow

*

Of the more than 1,000 birds the Government has tested so far this month, only five dead birds were found to have had the H5 virus, Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow says.

Speaking to the media today, Dr Chow said the most important measure is to monitor the H5N1 trend within our bird population to ensure it does not come into contact with people or poultry.

He said the authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are actually testing more dead birds and bird swabs on a regular basis.

"I can foresee that there will be continuous incidents of such findings," he said.

No trend in obstetricians moving to private sector

Regarding the obstetricians in the public hospitals, he said the Government has yet to see the trend moving towards the private sector.

"I believe now with the new measures, there will be a finite number of Mainland pregnant mothers in Hong Kong and therefore also a finite number of deliveries in our hospitals, whether in the private or public sector. So, I think the situation will balance out, eventually."
