The total gross value of construction works performed by main contractors last year rose 1.5% to $101.1 billion in nominal terms compared to a year ago, but dropped 3.4% in real terms, after discounting the effect of price changes.
The Census & Statistics Department today said the gross value of construction works performed at private sector sites totalled $34.3 billion last year, up 2.4% in nominal terms. The rise was mainly associated with residential building projects and service building projects. In real terms, it dropped 6%.
For public-sector sites, the gross value rose 20.2% to $18.4 billion in nominal terms, and 15.3% in real terms. The increase was evenly spread across the construction of buildings and that of structures and facilities.
The gross value of construction works performed by main contractors at locations other than construction sites amounted to $48.4 billion, down 4.7% in nominal terms and 7.1% in real terms.
Residential building projects accounted for the largest share in the total gross value of construction works performed at construction sites last year. The gross value of construction works performed in respect of these projects amounted to $22.7 billion, up 10.3% in nominal terms.
Service building projects constituted the second largest group of construction site works. The gross value of construction works performed in respect of these projects totalled $9.3 billion, up 42.7% in nominal terms.
The total gross value of construction works performed by main contractors in last year's fourth quarter dropped 1.5%, to $25.9 billion in nominal terms, compared to a year ago, and fell 6.2% in real terms, after discounting the effect of price changes.
