Exchange fund foreign assets down $12.6b

Foreign assets, representing the Exchange Fund's external assets, amounted to $972.5 billion at the end of January, down $12.6 billion on December 2006, the Monetary Authority says.

 

The Monetary Base, comprising Certificates of Indebtedness, Government-issued currency notes and coins in circulation, the Aggregate Balance of the banking system and Exchange Fund Bills and Notes issued, amounted to $300 billion.

 

Claims on the private sector in Hong Kong amounted to $104.2 billion, while foreign liabilities, representing mainly obligations under repurchase agreements, amounted to $1.4 billion.
