Electoral office measures target disabled

*

The Registration & Electoral Office plans to set up about 520 polling stations for this year's Legislative Council Election, of which 70% will be accessible to people with disabilities, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam says.

He told lawmakers today the office is identifying venues to be used as polling stations accessible to people with disabilities. In the 2004 election, 59% of polling stations offered such access.

Voters with disabilities can apply to the office five days before the polling day to switch to an accessible polling station. The office may make arrangements for the Society for Rehabilitation's Rehabus service to transport voters with disabilities to the polling stations.

The office will set up a hotline for visually-impaired voters to provide information on the candidates, and will offer templates to help them mark the ballot paper on the polling day.
