Two teams of Hong Kong secondary school students have achieved outstanding results at the 48th International Physics Olympiad and the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad.
The International Physics Olympiad was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from July 16 to 24. The Hong Kong team won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The gold medallists were Li Shing-yan from STFA Leung Kau Kui College and Li Yang-hong from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School. The silver medallist was Rahul Arya from King George V School. The bronze medallists were Chau Chun-wang from St Margaret's Co-educational English Secondary and Primary School and Lai Ka-ching from CCC Ming Yin College.
The International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 16 to 23. The Hong Kong team won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals, plus an honourable mention.
Samuel Lee from CNEC Christian College won gold, while Kwok Man-yi from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School won silver and she was ranked second among the 62 girl contestants.
Yu Hoi-wai from La Salle College, Jeff York Ye from GT (Ellen Yeung) College and Alvin Tse from Yew Chung International School-Secondary were each awarded a bronze medal. Arvin Leung of Diocesan Boys' School obtained an honourable mention.
Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung congratulated the Hong Kong teams on their outstanding performance in the two competitions.
"The good results achieved by the Hong Kong teams showcase their ability in mathematics and physics.
"The Education Bureau will continue to support and nurture more students with talent and interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to enrich the talent pool, and hence enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong in the international arena."
