Fatal accident inquiry launched

July 10, 2017

The Labour Department has launched an investigation into a fatal industrial accident at a construction site in Hung Hom.

Three workers died today while carrying out underground digging work for power cables.

The department said it is investigating the accident and has issued suspension notices to the contractors.

It will identify the cause of the accident, ascertain liability and recommend improvements.

It also said it will initiate prosecution measures if any violation of work-safety legislation is found.

It added the contractors cannot resume work until measures are adopted to ensure safety.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Law Chi-kwong and Commissioner for Labour Carlson Chan visited the victims’ families at the hospital tonight.

Mr Law expressed sadness over the deaths of the workers, saying the Government will provide assistance to the victims' families.

Mr Chan said an inter-departmental meeting will be held to discuss how to prevent similar accidents from happening.
