CE unveils education plan

July 05, 2017

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has outlined a package of priority measures to support quality education.

Unveiling the plan to legislators today, Mrs Lam said a non-means-tested annual subsidy of $30,000 will be provided for eligible full-time post-secondary students.

They must attain the minimum marks required to enter undergraduate university programmes in the Diploma for Secondary Education Examination.

Mrs Lam also proposed to increase the Teacher-to-Class ratio for public primary and secondary schools, including special schools, by 0.1 across-the-board.

It will bring about the creation of 2,350 teaching posts, enabling schools to have additional teachers to take forward initiatives to enhance education quality.

She said the Government aims to implement the initiatives in September, when the 2017-18 school year starts.

Mrs Lam said she hopes the Legislative Council Finance Committee will approve the funding for the measures by the end of the current LegCo year.
