Construction industry safety prioritised

(March 19, 2017)

The Labour Department will launch a special operation targeting work at height in the construction industry.

At the Construction Industry Safety Award presentation ceremony today, Commissioner for Labour Carlson Chan said special attention will be paid to high-risk work such as scaffolding.

Mr Chan said he is highly concerned about the recent spate of fatal industrial accidents.

There have been 10 workplace fatalities so far this year, and five of whom involved workers falling from on high.

However, he said there has been marked improvement in occupational safety in the construction industry over the past year, adding the industrial accident rate per 1,000 workers dropped from 39.6 to 34.8 year-on-year in the first three quarters in 2016.

The department will continue improving safety measures, and stepping up promotion and education about the issue, he added.

The award scheme commended practitioners for good practices that boost safety and health awareness within the construction industry.
