Safe caterers commended

November 27, 2016

Commissioner for Labour Carlson Chan presented prizes in the 2016-17 Catering Industry Safety Award Scheme today.

Organised by the Labour Department and the Occupational Safety & Health Council, the event saw the participation of 317 catering establishments and 291 supervisory staff.

Mr Chan called on the food and beverage services industry to enhance occupational-health standards, noting the labour-intensive sector provides 240,000 jobs in Hong Kong.

He also said the concerted efforts of the industry, the Government and the council led to a 42% drop in the accident toll in the trade to 5,000 over the last decade.

He called for the concerted efforts of stakeholders to ensure employees’ safety and health as the industry still recorded the highest number of work accidents among all trades.

Launched in 1999, the Catering Industry Safety Award Scheme encourages a good occupational safety culture in the catering industry and recognises catering establishments, supervisors and workers with good safety performance.
