Unemployment remains at 3.4%

September 19, 2016

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.4% in the June to August quarter, unchanged from the May to July period, the Census & Statistics Department said today.

The underemployment rate remained at 1.4%.

Non-seasonally adjusted increases in the unemployment rate were mainly seen in the professional and business services, excluding cleaning and similar activities, while a decrease was seen in the construction sector.

Total employment increased by 5,400 to 3,816,800 during the period, and the labour force increased by 7,700 to 3,958,000.

There were 141,200 unemployed people and 55,900 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said, the labour market stayed resilient so far this year. However, the near-term employment outlook is still clouded by the lingering external headwinds and their potential repercussions on local business sentiment.

The Government will closely monitor its developments, he added.
