CE awards scholarships

August 26, 2016

Chief Executive CY Leung officiated at the Award Presentation Ceremony for the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme.

Seventy-eight students were selected out of 681 applicants as the second cohort of awardees honoured with the prestigious title of Hong Kong Scholars.

Forty-nine of them will study for undergraduate studies while 29 will take up postgraduate studies in the 2016-17 academic year.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Leung said the scheme encourages top students to study overseas and young people should get to know the world.

"For Hong Kong to compete successfully in the 21st century, we must continue to embrace the outside world. Our young generation must get to know the world and must feel as comfortable in any overseas setting as they are in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon or the New Territories.

"The Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme is part of our effort in encouraging top students to study overseas."

Apart from conventional disciplines, some awardees will study specialties such as music, fine art and forensic science, neuropsychology and music therapy, which are not taught in Hong Kong.

The scheme is one of the initiatives announced in the 2014 Policy Address.

It helps local students pursue overseas studies in world-renowned universities to enhance Hong Kong's role as Asia's world city in a globalised knowledge economy.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng was also one of the officiating guests at the ceremony.
