Unemployment remains at 3.4%

August 18, 2016

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.4% in the May-to-July quarter, unchanged from the April-to-June period, the Census & Statistics Department said today.

The underemployment rate remained at 1.4%.

Non-seasonally adjusted increases in the unemployment rate were mainly seen in the warehousing and support activities for the transportation sector, while a decrease was seen in the construction sector.

Total employment increased by 4,300 to 3,811,400 during the period, and the labour force increased by 7,100 to 3,950,300.

There were 138,800 unemployed people and 55,500 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said, the labour market held largely stable in overall terms. However, the near-term employment outlook is still clouded by the lingering external headwinds and their potential repercussions on local business sentiment.

The easing trend in labour demand across several sectors also remained a cause for concern, he added.

The Labour Department has launched programmes to offer training and employment support to young school leavers entering the labour market, he noted.
