Secretary for Education Eddie Ng today congratulated six Hong Kong secondary school students for scoring a record medal haul at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad.

The medal tally of three gold, two silver and a bronze is the city's highest at the event.

The Hong Kong team ranked in the top 10 for the first time, coming ninth of 109 teams.

Officiating at the event's closing ceremony, Mr Ng said the results show Hong Kong students possess immense potential in mathematics.

"The Hong Kong team's success achieved this year once again demonstrated the fruitful collaboration among the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong) Committee in nurturing mathematically gifted local students."

The gold medallists were Yu Hoi-wai from La Salle College, Lee Shun-ming from CNEC Christian College, and John Wu from Hong Kong International School.

Cheung Wai-lam from Queen Elizabeth School and Leung Yui-hin from Diocesan Boys' School won silver, while Kwok Man-yi from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School won bronze.
