Student suicides meeting held

May 27, 2016

The Committee on Prevention of Student Suicides held its second meeting today to examine the link between student suicide and mental health.

Committee chairman Prof Paul Yip said the members further discussed preventive measures proposed by the working group on mental health.

Proposed measures include promoting students' mental health, enhancing the identification, referral and support mechanism for students with mental health issues, and providing tools for identification and support, as well as appropriate training for teachers.

At its first meeting on April 29, members agreed to set up five working groups on mental health, family, school, media and youth/post-secondary institutions for focused discussions.

The other four working groups will meet between June and August, and will submit their suggestions to the committee for further deliberation at its monthly meetings.
