School green roof safety a priority

May 25, 2016

The Education Bureau attaches great importance to school green roof safety, Secretary for Education Eddie Ng says.

Replying to lawmakers' questions today, Mr Ng said there are 45 school building projects completed by the Architectural Services Department with greening facilities that form part and parcel of the new school premises.

The design of the relevant installation has been taken care of during the vetting stage of the school building projects concerned, and the greenery works met safety requirements, he noted.

Another 66 schools have sought the bureau's approval for implementing green roof projects after the school premises were built, with 62 of them having applied the Environment & Conservation Fund for the conduct of the green roof works and the remaining four being self-funded projects.

Mr Ng added that the schools need to file applications when formulating plans for green roof projects which would involve structural alteration to the school premises.

The bureau has issued a letter to all schools reminding them of the points to note with regard to green roof installation, including the requirements for carrying out such projects.

He reiterated that schools should seek professional advice from an authorised person or registered structural engineer as soon as possible to ensure safety in case they notice seepage, cracks or loose concrete on the ceiling of the storey below the green roof.
