Secretary for Education Eddie Ng says the Hong Kong Institute of Education has made great improvements in the past decade which have led to it being granted university status.
The Legislative Council today passed the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Bill 2016 awarding it university status.
Mr Ng told reporters the institute has shown much improvement in terms of its academic and curriculum quality and its research capability over the years.
He said the collective effort of the institute's management, professional teachers, lecturers, students and alumni led to its success in achieving university status.
