More care for student mental health

March 16, 2016

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng says the Government will work closely with concerned bodies to enhance schools' awareness of student mental health and to identify needy students to help prevent suicides.

Mr Ng told lawmakers today that in addition to an urgent meeting with representatives of different educational and professional organisations on March 10 to discuss recent student suicide incidents, the Education Bureau issued a letter to schools yesterday encouraging them to promote life education.

They were also encouraged to conduct sessions on stress-coping strategies, positive values and attitudes, and provide information on seeking assistance, for Primary Five and Primary Six, and secondary school students.

Related teaching materials have been provided to schools for reference, he added.

The bureau will soon form a committee to study the recent student suicides and recommend preventive measures.

It will also arrange seminars for schools and parents to enhance their awareness of, and skills in, suicide prevention and intervention, Mr Ng added.
