Labour chief meets Indonesian official

August 24, 2015

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung met a high-level delegation led by Indonesian Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri today.

They discussed a range of issues on Indonesian domestic helpers, including placement and training, employment rights and benefits, efforts made by both governments in protecting them, and also the costs incurred by them before arriving in Hong Kong to work.

Mr Cheung said he appreciates the significant contribution of Indonesian domestic helpers to Hong Kong, adding the Government is committed to protecting their rights.

He called for Indonesia to take action to reduce the fees charged by employment agencies or consider offering loans of lower interest to the helpers.

The two sides agreed to work together to enhance the transparency of training and placement fees, and to strengthen the monitoring of recruitment agencies to prevent illegal fees being charged.

It was also agreed that both sides will maintain high-level contact to update each other on their policies and efforts in protecting foreign domestic helpers.
