Unemployment stays at 3.2%

June 18, 2015

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.2% in the March-May quarter, matching the February-April figure, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate rose from 1.3% to 1.4%.

An increase in the unemployment rate was mainly observed in the wholesale sector, while a decrease was seen in the decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings sector.

As for the underemployment rate, an increase was mainly seen in the construction sector.

Total employment dropped by 12,200 on the previous quarter to 3,780,100. The labour force decreased by 12,100 to 3,907,700.

There were 127,700 unemployed people and 52,900 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said the labour market remained steady during the period, and the near-term outlook remains clouded by the highly uncertain external environment and the sluggish performance of the retail and other tourism-related sectors.
