Gov't investigates elderly care home

May 27, 2015

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said today that a thorough investigation will be carried out into a Tai Po care home accused of not taking proper care of its elderly residents.

The private care home is accused of making seniors queue up for showers on an open-air terrace naked or half-dressed.

Mr Cheung said the Social Welfare Department is highly concerned about the reported violation of the seniors' right to privacy, adding that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

He warned that the department may revoke the care home's licence if there is enough evidence to prove the residents' privacy has been violated.

The case has also been referred to the Police to check if the alleged abuse constitutes a criminal offence.

In response to a meeting held today between Cathay Pacific management and union members, which was mediated by the Labour Department, Mr Cheung said that time and space must be given for the two sides to talk, as labour disputes can only be ironed out through dialogue and communication.
