Opera degree course starts

March 30, 2015

The Academy for Performing Arts has launched the world’s first bachelor degree course on Cantonese opera.

Speaking to the media today, the academy’s Director Adrian Walter said Cantonese opera is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation as an intangible cultural heritage, and it is important for the arts institute to develop it.

Chinese Opera School Chair Fredric Mao said although the academy has been providing Cantonese opera courses for over a decade, the major difficulty in providing a degree course is to develop a proper teaching method.

The course also needs to develop relationships and interactions with the opera industry so students can experiment and learn how to connect with a modern audience.
