450 outstanding students lauded

March 22, 2015

Around 450 students, five working adults and two apprentices were presented with awards and scholarships under the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund during a ceremony held at City Hall today.

One of the outstanding students was Victor Lui who is studying law at the University of Hong Kong. He received an Overseas Fellowships award of $300,000. He plans to pursue a Master of Laws degree at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom this October.

"I am very deeply honoured and privileged to get this scholarship. It means a lot to me. It gives me a lot of financial support for the career path which I have chosen," Mr Lui said.

John Ho, a gas utilisation fitter, received an Outstanding Apprentice award. He said the prize has boosted his confidence and encouraged him to continue studying.

Officiating at the ceremony, Lady Youde said since its inception in 1987, the fund has disbursed more than $237 million to more than 710,000 people through a spectrum of award and sponsorship schemes.

Addressing the ceremony, memorial fund council chairman Richard Ho said the fund will continue to provide the young generation with opportunities to receive quality education and realise their potential, so that they can venture into new frontiers and gear up for the exciting challenges that lie ahead.
