More exercise set for students

March 18, 2015

The Education Bureau is reviewing and updating the Key Learning Areas in the physical education curriculum guides to encourage students to do more exercise and help schools develop a sports culture.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng told the Legislative Council today: "Healthy lifestyle is one of the important goals in the curriculum reform. The Education Bureau is reviewing and updating curriculum guides. The PE curriculum continues to encourage students to do more exercises for developing an active and healthy lifestyle and to adopt measures to help schools build up a sports culture."

He said knowledge, skills and attitudes related to healthy lifestyle are also covered in other subjects and in life-wide learning activities.

The bureau has implemented different measures to strengthen collaboration among schools, sports organisations and parents for cultivating student interest in physical activities and boosting sports culture.

They include providing a subsidy to schools to purchase sports equipment and employ sports coaches, conduct professional development programmes for teachers, and organise parent-child physical activities.

Community promotions have also helped educate children and parents on childhood obesity.
