Jobless rate steady at 3.3%

March 17, 2015

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.3% in the December-February quarter, unchanged from November-January, the Census & Statistics Department said today.

The underemployment rate dipped from 1.6% to 1.5%.

A non-seasonally adjusted increase in the unemployment rate was seen in the arts, entertainment and recreation, and the repair, laundry, domestic and other personal service activities sectors, while a decrease was seen in information and communications, and the construction sectors' foundation and superstructure works.

Total employment increased by about 5,700 to 3,807,500 during the period, and the labour force expanded by about 7,100 to 3,929,300.

There were 121,800 unemployed people and 57,300 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said the labour market remained largely stable during the period, while both total employment and the labour force grew further over a year earlier.

The near-term employment outlook hinges on the overall economic situation and business sentiment, in particular the performance of the consumption and tourism-related sectors.

The Government will stay vigilant and monitor developments in the labour market closely, he added.
