Jobless rate steady at 3.3%

December 18, 2014

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.3% in the September-November quarter, unchanged from August-October, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate rose slightly from 1.5% to 1.6%.

A non-seasonally adjusted increase in the unemployment rate was seen in the foundation and superstructure works of the construction sector and the retail sector, while a decrease was seen in the food and beverage service activities sector.

Total employment stayed almost unchanged at 3,779,400.

The labour force fell by 1,900 to 3,905,900.

There were 126,400 unemployed people and 62,100 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said while the unemployment situation in sectors more affected by the Occupy movement has remained largely stable, some signs of worsening in the underemployment situation have been observed. He said the Government will monitor this impact on employment and grassroots workers' income.
