Triumphant return:  Hong Kong team members (from left) Tai Wai-ting, Yu Hoi-wai, Yuen Ka-fai, Gu Kwan-yin, Man Chung-chun and Gigi Lam  brought home medals.

A team of six secondary four students representing Hong Kong won three gold and three silver medals at the Eleventh International Junior Science Olympiad held in Mendoza from December 2 to 10.

Gu Kwan-yin from Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College, Tai Wai-ting from Queen Elizabeth School and Yu Hoi-wai from La Salle College won the gold medals, while Gigi Lam  from St Paul's Co-educational College, Man Chung-chun from PLK Centenary Li Shiu Chung Memorial College and Kevin Yuen Ka-fai from St Joseph's College won the silver.

This year, about 230 scientifically gifted secondary students from 40 countries or regions joined the competition for 15-year-olds, which tests their analytical and problem-solving skills through a multiple-choice test, and theoretical and experimental exams.

The Hong Kong team members were selected at a screening section co-organised by the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Association for Science & Mathematics Education and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and underwent training for one year before the competition.
