The Labour Department is boosting co-operation with the Indonesian Consulate to promote domestic helpers’ rights and educate them on protecting themselves.
The department participated for the first time in a welcome ceremony for newly-arrived domestic helpers, held by the consulate today.
Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung welcomed the collaboration, saying it demonstrates the Government’s commitment to domestic workers’ rights.
“We have stepped up publicity and education to raise foreign domestic helpers' awareness, and set out a range of short-term to long-term measures to enhance their protection," he said.
The department will promote employment rights, occupational safety and health in other events hosted by the consulate, including the Indonesian Festival on August 24.
The Government and the consulate will regularly share information on problematic employment agencies, employers and maids, he added.
