$129m in scholarships, awards issued

April 23, 2014

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng today presented certificates to the winners of more than 5,000 scholarships and awards, worth $129 million.

Speaking to reporters after the presentation ceremony, Mr Ng said the number of awardees and the scholarship amount were higher this year, showing the Government’s commitment to supporting higher education and students.

One hundred students with special educational needs were granted scholarships in recognition of their outstanding performance.

He commended one awardee in particular, saying although Cherie Yeung lost her arms in an accident, she has resiliently continued her art.

The Government set up the Scholarship Fund in 2008, which covers publicly-funded programmes to attract outstanding local and overseas students to study in Hong Kong. The self-financing programmes are covered by the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship which started in 2011.

Both scholarships have respectively added the Endeavour Merit Award and the Endeavour Scholarship to commend outstanding students with special educational needs, with a $10,000 scholarship.
