Wage review set for October

August 23, 2012
The Minimum Wage Commission will consider the economic and social indicators in reviewing the statutory minimum wage rate and submit a report by the end of October.

Speaking to the media after inspecting barrier-free improvement works in Hung Hom today, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said the commission will consider a number of factors, including inflation, Hong Kong’s economic growth, the unemployment rate trend, the business environment, and price changes.

The minimum wage was implemented in May last year and a review must be conducted for every two years, by law, he said.

The commission will make reference to data, which reflects the real social and economic situation, he said. The commission will submit its recommendations to the Chief Executive in Council by the end of October.
