Drug abuse falls 23%

September 15, 2017

The total number of reported drug abusers in Hong Kong fell 23% year-on-year to 3,994 in the first half of this year, the Action Committee Against Narcotics announced today.

Citing the latest figures of the Central Registry of Drug Abuse, the committee said the number of reported drug abusers under the age of 21 dropped 20% to 252 year-on-year.

The number of new drug abusers also fell 30% to 758 year-on-year. However, half of them were aged 21 to 35, suggesting drug abuse in this age group is still a cause for concern.

Committee Chairman Dr Ben Cheung said: "Although the overall number of reported drug abusers in the first half of 2017 has declined and the median drug abuse history of newly reported cases has become shorter, the relatively high proportion of drug-abusing young adults and hidden drug abusers still call for continuous anti-drug efforts."

Despite a 13% drop in user number, heroin remains the most common illegal substance abused.

Commissioner for Narcotics Manda Chan said the Government will continue working with different organisations to strengthen its anti-drug education campaigns.
