TK Lai urges phone vigilance

December 08, 2016

Secretary for Security TK Lai has urged the public to be cautious about phone calls claimed to be from the Government, saying the number of phone scam cases has rebounded.

Briefing reporters after today's Fight Crime Committee meeting, Mr Lai said the main trend in phone scamming this year has been from people claiming to be from the Government.

Last year it was people claiming to be Mainland officials.

He said more young people in Hong Kong are becoming phone scam victims, especially Mainland students.

Police have sent reminders to Mainland students through schools and student associations by email warning of phone scamming.

Speaking on the overall crime situation, Mr Lai said the crime rate stayed at low level in the first 10 months of the year.

On the complaint case against now-retired superintendent Franklin Chu, who allegedly struck a passer-by with his baton during the Occupy protests in Mong Kok in 2014, Mr Lai said Police have investigated the case and are awaiting Department of Justice advice.
