Customs officers have arrested 14 people and seized 50,000 pages of suspected infringing tutorial notes as well as computers, a printer and photocopiers, valued at $580,000.
The raids, mounted on November 23 and 24, covered 13 chain tutorial centres and an office in various districts of Hong Kong.
Those arrested, aged 27 to 55, include a director, a person responsible for running the centres and a teacher. They have been released on bail.
The Copyright Ordinance makes it an offence for a commercial establishment, including a tutorial centre, to distribute infringing copies of a copyright work in the course of business.
The maximum penalty is a fine of $50,000 per infringing copy and four years’ imprisonment.
