4 arrested in unlawful protest

November 07, 2016

Police arrested four people while dispersing a violent unlawful assembly in Western District last night.

In a statement today, Police said that from 7pm yesterday protestors assembled on Connaught Road West and Des Voeux Road West causing severe traffic disruption.

Some behaved in a disorderly manner, throwing bricks and other objects.

Protestors refused to leave despite repeated warnings, and they charged Police cordon lines.

After multiple appeals, including the display of warning banners, the protestors still refused to comply.

The statement said Police had no alternative but to use batons and discharge pepper spray to restore order and safeguard public safety.

Two police officers were injured during the operation. One was hit by bricks thrown by protestors and sustained leg injuries while another sustained hand injuries.

Police arrested three men and a woman, aged 39 to 65, for obstructing officers and failing to produce proof of identity. They have been detained for questioning.

Police said it strongly condemns the protesters’ unlawful behaviour, saying further arrests are possible as the investigation into the violence continues.

Police said it respects the freedoms of expression, speech and assembly, and handles public meetings, processions and demonstrations in a fair, just and impartial manner in accordance with the law.

It is Police policy to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and order.

It called on people to comply with Hong Kong law and maintain social order when expressing their views.
