Courageous heroes:  Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Wong Chi-hung presents the Good Citizen Awards.

Forty people who helped Police fight crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award Presentation Ceremony today.

They helped in the arrest of more than 30 people for a variety of offences, including theft, robbery, wounding, burglary, indecent assault and drug possession.

Each received a certificate and $3,000.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Wong Chi-hung praised them for their exemplary courage and alertness, and urged people to continue working with Police to fight crime.

He said Hong Kong's crime figures in the first half of the year dropped to a record-low level since 1979.

Promoting a close partnership between Police and the community is one of the most effective crime-fighting measures, he added.
