Penalties set for storage centres

August 29, 2016

The Fire Services Department has issued 88 penalty tickets to 24 mini-storage centres since the fatal Ngau Tau Kok blaze in June.

Speaking to reporters after the Fight Crime Committee meeting today, Secretary for Security TK Lai said the department had inspected 633 mini-storage centres up to August 21.

The inspection is ongoing as there are about 760 mini-storage centres, which is more than the previous estimate as some have been newly found during inspections.

The Buildings Department has issued 55 orders to 27 mini-storage centres, including 27 removal orders, 27 repair orders and a discontinuance order, he added.

Meanwhile, he said Hong Kong’s law and order situation in the first seven months of the year was satisfactory, with a 14.5% drop in total crime cases compared to the same period last year.

The total number of crimes for the period dropped by 5,896 to 34,688 cases.

Decreases were recorded in deception, miscellaneous theft, criminal damage, shop theft, wounding and serious assault, criminal intimidation, indecent assault and rape cases.

However, there were increases in cases of triad-related crime, robbery, domestic violence and homicide.
