Immigration officers to visit South Asia

August 28, 2016

An Immigration Department delegation will depart today for Pakistan and Bangladesh to outline Hong Kong's stringent legislative provisions against illegal employment and human trafficking, and the objectives of the Unified Screening Mechanism.

Headed by Assistant Director of Immigration Fung Ngai-wa, the delegation will explore co-operation with the countries' authorities on intelligence gathering and liaise on enforcement.

There has been a surge in the number of illegal immigrants from the two countries being smuggled into Hong Kong in recent years.

There is also a trend of these illegal immigrants lodging claims for non-refoulement protection to resist removal immediately after being arrested or surrendered, which constitutes a serious abuse of Hong Kong's non-refoulement screening mechanism.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is very concerned about the situation.
