Crime hits 37-year low

July 27, 2016

Hong Kong's overall crime figure for the first half of the year dropped 13.2% year-on-year to 29,542 cases, the lowest for the six-month period since 1979.

At a press conference today Police Director of Crime & Security Au Chi-kwong said the overall detection rate was 44.4%.

The number of homicides and robberies increased year-on-year while crimes like assault, deception, theft, burglary, criminal intimidation, serious drug offences and deception registered a year-on-year drop, with deception cases significantly decreasing 30.9% to 3,368.

Mr Au said, despite the hefty drop in deception cases, the money swindled exceeded $100 million.

Of particular concern were 48 "romance scam" cases involving $36 million in which fraudsters preyed on women by pretending to be professionals, businessmen and army officers looking for love partners.

Using the Internet, the fraudsters persuaded the victims to transfer money to bank accounts in Southeast Asian countries.

To avoid such scams, Mr Au advised people to visit the Police website for news on the latest deception tactics.

Meanwhile, Police Director of Operations Lau Yip-shing called on the organisers of processions and assemblies to notify Police well in advance of such activities.

Advance notice allows Police to deploy manpower more effectively to maintain order.
