Hidden haul:  Customs officers have shut down a syndicate using false compartments in trucks to smuggle goods.

Customs officers have arrested five men, shutting down a syndicate using false compartments in trucks to smuggle $7.3 million in precious metal and electronics products across the boundary.

On June 17 officers monitored a truck entering a cargo yard in Yuen Long. Its trailer was unloaded and it towed away another trailer.

Officers found 700kg of silver suspected to have been unloaded from false compartments in the unloaded trailer's axels. More than 2,600 CPUs were also found.

The truck was later intercepted at Man Kam To Control Point and officers found 244 mobile phones and more than 2,000 CPUs in false compartments in the trailer's axles.

Officers then searched an industrial building flat in Kwun Tong and found a small quantity of electronic products and packaging materials. It is believed to be the syndicate's electronic goods storage space.

The five men, aged 35 to 71, were arrested.
