7 arrested in pirate cosmetics raids

June 20, 2016

Customs officers have arrested seven people aged 22 to 47, including six salespersons and a shop owner, and seized over 1,000 counterfeit cosmetics and skincare products worth $24,000.

During a citywide enforcement action between June 16 and 19, six shops were raided and counterfeit products including face powder, brow liner and moisturizer were seized.

Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau Head Catherine Yip said today the Customs & Excise Department will continue taking stringent enforcement action against the sale of counterfeit goods.

She appealed to consumers to purchase items from shops that have a good reputation.

The Trade Descriptions Ordinance prohibits the sale, and possession for sale, of goods with forged trademarks. Offenders face a maximum fine of $500,000 and five-years' jail.
