Any suggestion that local bookstore founder Lee Bo was "involuntarily removed to the Mainland" remains speculative, the Government said today.
In a statement responding to media enquiries, the Government added that it attaches great importance to the missing person cases and will continue to follow through with them.
The Police have been conducting investigations even after Mr Lee's wife cancelled her report to the Police, the statement said.
Under the established channel of communication, the Police have been seeking assistance from the Mainland authorities and have received replies which the Police have made public, it added.
The Government reiterated that only Hong Kong law enforcement agencies are empowered under the Basic Law to enforce laws in Hong Kong.
