112 arrested for counterfeit sales

June 30, 2015

Customs officers have arrested 112 people in crackdowns on counterfeit goods sold online in the first half of this year.

Officers had seized more than 15,000 counterfeit items in 99 cases, including handbags, clothing, sports shoes and other accessories, worth about $1.2 million.

Briefing the media today, Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau Head Louise Ho noted the trend of migration from auction sites to social networking platforms through which the crime was committed.

There were 64 such cases among the 99 - three times the number recorded in the same period in 2014.

Among the people arrested, 45 were aged below 21, twice the number recorded in the same period last year.

Ms Ho said more students, in particular secondary school students, were found to be involved in such illicit business. The youngest arrestee was a 12-year-old Form 1 student.

The department will continue to combat online sales of fake goods during the summer holidays, she added.
